While the race for Olympic qualification hasn’t even officially begun, a major shake-up is already underway for British and Dutch triathlon: British elite Ben Dijkstra has announced that he will compete as a ‘neutral athlete’ during the upcoming weeks, before officially representing The Netherlands.
Dijkstra naturally has Olympic ambitions, which immediately puts him in contention with Dutch men such as Mitch Kolkman, Ian Pennekamp, Gjalt Panjer, and Victor Goené – athletes who are also aiming to secure a spot at the Los Angeles 2028 Games. With The Netherlands’ current focus on the Mixed Team Relay rather than individual events, it seems likely that only two Dutch men may ultimately qualify – if the team qualifies at all.
“I’ll always have fond memories and be grateful for having represented the red, white and blue of Great Britain but it’s time for change. From now on I’ll have a stint as a neutral athlete, before being able to officially represent the Netherlands. First race up is on Friday in Egypt to see where the body is at, then hopefully a full season ahead. My goals, passion and love for this sport remain unchanged and I can’t wait until I can wear the orange.”
Dijkstra enjoyed a strong season last year, finishing eighth at both the WTCS Abu Dhabi and WTCS Yokohama events.
