Brazil’s Manoel Messias and Luisa Baptista took today’s standard-distance Americas Triathlon Cup and South Americas Championships Villarica in Chile by running clear during the final lap of the run.
Baptista runs to the win
Japan’s Sarika Nakayama led the women into T1, but was joined by four others on the bike. Nakayama was able to lead the way out onto the run with Canada’s Emy Legault at her side, but the run quickly became a duel between Legault and Baptista. The Brazilian broke away over the final of four laps of the run to take the win in 2:01:01, with Legault taking second 10 seconds later. Nakayama rounded out the podium in 2:03:08.

Messias outruns countryman Hidalgo
Chile’s Vicente Trewhela led the men out of the water, but there wasn’t much of a gap and off the bike it was his countryman Diego Moya who led the way onto the run course, with lots of men chasing close behind. Messias and his countryman Miguel Hidalgo eventually pulled clear of the rest of the field, with Messias eventually pulling clear to take the day in 1:48:08. Hidalgo would finish second in 1:48:25, while Moya hung tough for third in 1:48:42.
