After months of being injured, Lucy Charles has just made the best possible comeback. In Samorin, she won the World Championships Long Distance (2km swim, 80km bike, 18km run) with a lot of dominance leaving behind her compatriot Emma Pallant and the Dutch defending champion Sarissa de Vries.
Charles took the lead in the race during the swim and immediately showed that she had not forgotten how to swim. When she came out of the water after 26:16 minutes, she had a one minute lead on Rebecca Clarke and only the rest of the women followed further behind.
On the bike, however, it was De Vries who rode to the front and passed Charles about halfway. Charles was able to catch up though and the two eventually rode together to T2. During the run, there was no stopping Charles and she immediately made the difference.
Charles won the race in a time of 3:34:17. Her compatriot Pallant, who had a tough swim but came out on top especially during the run, finished second at 3:11 minutes. De Vries took the bronze at 5:09.
