It was a thriller of a run, but eventually it was Estonia’s Kaidi Kivioja who took the day at Ironman 70.3 Dresden. She shared the podium with Germany’s Caroline Pohle, who finished in second place (+0:42). Third place was claimed by Britain’s Nikki Bartlett (+3:07).
After the swim, Kivioja had to do some work, as she was third out of the water and dealt with a 46-seconds deficit. Pohle was first to hop onto the bike. Soon Kivioja found the race leaders and joined Pohle and Bartlett in front. Almost simultaneously, the three racked their bikes back in T2, after which Pohle and Kivioja battled on the half-marathon.
Only in the final kilometers, Kivioja was able to break free from Pohle. Kivioja noted a run time of 1:20:52 minutes and was just faster than Pohle. Pohle ended up in second position and Bartlett rounded the podium.
