She had to be patient, but with a well-executed run, Spain’s Gurutze Frades ended up claiming the victory at Ironman 70.3 Cozumel. That was a pity for America’s Amy Cymerman, who had dominated most of the race, but saw Frades fly by in the last kilometers.
In the water, two of the only five athletes that started, showed to be a good match, as they exited at the same time; part of that duo was Cymerman. During the bike part, the American athlete was untouchable. Cymerman created a buffer of 2:12 minutes for the run, but that didn’t turn out to be enough.
In T2, it was already Frades, who was doing best at chasing down Cymerman. Cymerman managed to stay in the lead for 16K into the run, but then it was done for the American. Frades ended up sprinting towards the victory, while Cymerman had to settle for second (+5:35). Mexico’s Palmira Alvarez was running in third at the moment of writing (+13:18).
