She made her debut as a professional athlete there, also won her first race there, and now Lucy Charles-Barclay is returning to the Canary Islands: on May 17, the world-class athlete will race Ironman Lanzarote.
Lucy Charles-Barclay is a great example of an athlete who started triathlon at a relatively late age as an Age Grouper, proved extremely successful and then made the transition to the pro field just as successfully. Among other things, she won IM IM 70.3 world titles, won major Challenge Family races including The Championship, but of course the biggest highlight of all was her Ironman world title on Kona.
Her adventure as a professional athlete began in 2016 on Lanzarote. Another year she then had to wait for her first victory within the pro field, which she also took at Ironman Lanzarote (2017, ed.). “Anyone who’s followed my journey since then knows I love the challenging conditions of a volcanic island. I can’t wait to get back out there and take it on again.”
That Charles-Barclay will be strong on Lanzarote seems almost a certainty. Her fastest time on the island – 9:35:39 – has only been broken by Anne Haug (2024, 9:06:40 ed.).
