While the triathlon media is buzzing over the world record set by Kristian Blummenfelt at Ironman Texas this past weekend, the event was overshadowed by a profoundly tragic incident: 38-year-old influencer and triathlete Maria Flavia Araujo passed away during the swim. Araujo, an experienced triathlete, reportedly encountered difficulties early in the swim and drowned.
Flavia Araujo first took up triathlon eight years ago after being diagnosed with health issues. Since then, she established herself in the sport, qualifying for the AG Ironman 70.3 World Championships on two occasions.
Unclear Circumstances
It remains unclear exactly what went wrong during the swim in Texas. However, a friend – and subsequently several media outlets – suggested that Araujo had started the race while feeling ill but was determined to compete regardless.
Panic ensued immediately after the start when Flavia Araujo went underwater and failed to resurface. Although rescue workers arrived on the scene quickly, her body was recovered from Woodlands Lake three hours after the race began.
Statement from Ironman: Ironman has expressed its deep sadness and offered heartfelt condolences to her family and loved ones.
