It wasn’t the heavy favorite Beth Potter, nor was it Jeanne Lehair; instead, it was Sweden’s Tilda Mansson who delivered a massive upset and a brilliant victory at WTCS Yokohama. With this win, Mansson, who just turned 22, records the biggest triumph of her professional career.
During the swim, Sian Rainsley, Lisa Tertsch, Lehair, Miyu Sakai, and Richelle Hill initially carved out a small lead. However, everything came back together during the second of two swim laps; upon exiting the water, a large pack of 27 athletes were within just eleven seconds of each other. The group remained large on the bike, with a few more athletes even joining the lead pack. On the highly technical course – consisting of ten four-kilometer laps – it was primarily a waiting game before the real fireworks began. Germany’s Franka Rust was the first to return to T2 at the front of the pack, but thanks to a lightning-fast transition, it was France’s Emma Lombardi who started the final ten-kilometer run in the lead.
The long-awaited fireworks finally started during the run. Alongside Lombardi, Mansson, Lehair, and Tertsch pushed to the front, while Potter had a slow transition and trailed by just over five seconds. Nevertheless, Potter quickly bridged the gap to the leading quartet. Not long after, Lombardi was forced to drop back, followed eventually by Tertsch.
In the closing stages, Potter was the first to put in an acceleration – seeming the most likely candidate to take the win – but Mansson followed with apparent ease. In fact, Mansson then launched her own attack, though it seemed to come slightly too early as Potter managed to claw her way back. What followed was an impressive sprint in which Mansson ultimately proved too fast for Potter, securing her first victory – and her first podium – at the WTCS level.
Mansson won the race in 1:50:13, Potter took second in 1:50:15, and Lehair finished third in 1:50:36.
