Canada Man/ Woman Xtreme Triathlon in pictures (and words)

We wrote about the incredible Canada Man/Woman Xtreme triathlon on Sunday – now we have some beautiful photos from the event that featured the Lac-Megantic region of Quebec, Canada in its full, colorful glory.

You can read our race recap here. Now enjoy the photos by Kevin Mackinnon from the challenging day that saw athletes swim 1,500 m in 12-degree water, bike 180 km with 2,500 m of climbing, then take on a run that included lots of trails and a mountain -top finish.

They’re off – the race started at 6:15 AM, about 15 minutes before the sun came up.
The swim was changed to three loops of 500 m – the water temperature was just 12 degrees.
American John Hirsch struggles up one of the many tough climbs on the course.
As does fellow American Alysha Krall, who had to weave up the final climb of the day into T2.
Not that anyone is paying attention at this point, but Mont-Megantic is in the background … and in the clouds. That’s where the race would finish.
No time to enjoy the beautiful scenery.,
Just over halfway up the last 10 km climb to the top of Mont-Megantic.
And, again, no time to take a break and enjoy the view!
Sylvain Lafrance is all smiles – he finished fifth in the first edition of the race, second in the next two races, then finally got the win on Sunday.
In just her second long-distance start Florence Lavoie-Deraspe takes the win.
Lyne Bessette, a former Olympic cyclist, got lost on the run course and would end up taking second … for the third time.
