Netflix’s ‘Tour de France: Unchained’ brought to life on Strava

With the release of Netflix’s ‘Tour de France: Unchained’, the latest of the streaming platform’s binge-worthy sports focused docuseries, Strava has revealed how to get closer to the main characters and also follow the action at Le Tour this summer.

Launching on Netflix on June 8, 2023, the ‘Tour De France: Unchained’, by the producers of ‘Formula One: Drive to Survive’, follows seven teams during the 2022 Tour.

Home to 80% of the Tour de France riders, Strava notes that it offers viewers a front row seat of the action – from the pivotal moments of the 2022 Tour, to the key characters’ training schedules and the upcoming 2023 race.

(In 2022, out of the total start list of 176 Tour de France riders, 139 were on Strava – representing 80% of the male peloton, up from 72% in 2021.)

Strava has revealed the profiles to follow on its app while watching Tour de France: Unchained, including two time Tour winner, Tadej Pogačar, and leading British hopeful, Tom Pidcock, amongst others:

From the most challenging climbs in the French Alps, to perilous races through the cobblestones of rural villages, viewers can follow the hunt for the prestigious yellow jersey via the key cyclists’ activities on Strava.

In preparation for the 2022 edition of the Tour, as seen in the docuseries, pro cyclists recorded, on average, over 400 hours of individual training hours, with some riders committing over 30 hours each week of training on the bike – surpassing 1,000km per week.

Data from Strava also showed that the total elevation gained by the pro riders during their training in 2022 was over 180,000m – the equivalent of climbing Mt Everest over 20 times.

In March 2022, Strava announced a three-year partnership with the Tour de France and the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift. This partnership recognises Strava as the official ride partner and brings together the world’s largest sports community with the iconic cycling event.
