Ironman could make a return to Maastricht – The Netherlands – as early as 2027. The organization has approached the municipality of Maastricht to explore the possibility of bringing a full-distance Ironman back to the Limburg city. While it has not yet been confirmed whether discussions also include a 70.3 event, that option appears highly likely.
With Ironman formally expressing its interest in rejoining the race calendar, the municipality of Maastricht is currently assessing whether a return of the event is both feasible and desirable. Ironman left Maastricht in 2023 after withdrawing the license from local organizer Extra Leisure. At the time, athletes and suppliers were hit hardest by the decision: many athletes who had already registered did not receive refunds for a race that ultimately did not take place, while suppliers were left unpaid for services and deliveries already provided.
The municipality is now evaluating a wide range of factors, including organizational requirements, available resources, and the economic and social value the event could bring to the city. The potential impact of an Ironman return on Maastricht is also being carefully considered.
As part of this exploratory phase, the municipality has already signed a so-called Letter of Intent. While this document carries no binding obligations, it does provide a framework for Maastricht and Ironman to jointly investigate the possibilities of bringing the iconic long-distance race back to the city.
