The third edition of Challenge Cesenatico delivered a high-octane spectacle on Italy’s Adriatic Coast this weekend. Under moody, overcast skies and mild 18°C conditions, a sold-out field of over 1,400 athletes took to the start line. Ultimately, it was Denmark’s Valdemar Solok and South Africa’s Bridget Theunissen who emerged as the day’s protagonists, delivering commanding performances to claim their respective titles.
Men’s Race: Solok’s Biking Clinic
The race ignited with a 1.9km swim, where local favorite Michele Sarzilla (ITA) set a blistering pace of 23:41. He led a dense pack of 11 athletes into T1, including the eventual winner, Solok.
However, the complexion of the race shifted dramatically once the athletes hit the 90km bike course. While the lead group stayed tight in the opening flat sections, Solok utilized the hilly terrain to dismantle the competition. The Dane clocked a staggering bike split of 1:57:28 – averaging an elite 45.4 km/h – to enter T2 with a massive 3:14 cushion over his nearest rivals, Louis Woodgate (GRE) and Jannik Stoll (GER).
Behind the flying Dane, the drama focused on the chase. Sarzilla, who had slipped to tenth after the bike, mounted a relentless comeback. On the four-lap run course, the Italian surged through the field, eventually overtaking Woodgate to secure silver.
Men’s Podium Results:
- Valdemar Solok (DEN) – 3:35:44
- Michele Sarzilla (ITA) – 3:39:01
- Louis Woodgate (GRE) – 3:41:14 (Following the DQ of Alexander Richter)
Women’s Race: Theunissen Holds Her Nerve
The women’s battle was a tighter, more tactical affair. Denise Cavallini (ITA) led the swim in 27:01, but she was shadowed closely by Theunissen and Marta Bernardi (ITA).
The status quo remained largely unchanged throughout the 90km bike leg. Theunissen and Bernardi were inseparable, entering the second transition just one second apart. The race for the title would be decided on the run.
While Theunissen established a rhythm that no one could match, the fight for the remaining podium spots intensified. Sara Sandrini (ITA) provided the late-race fireworks; sitting in fourth at the halfway mark, she executed a brilliant negative split to hunt down third place by the 16km mark.
Theunissen crossed the line in 4:10:51 to take a well-earned victory, leaving the Italian duo of Bernardi and Sandrini to round out the podium for the home crowd.
Women’s Podium Results:
- Bridget Theunissen (RSA) – 4:10:51
- Marta Bernardi (ITA) – 4:14:39
- Sara Sandrini (ITA) – 4:15:28
