After athletes were critical about Ironman for providing updates on race cancellations and postponements without much lead time, Ironman has announced that it’s full-distance race in Texas can’t take place as scheduled in April. The company is hoping to reschedule the race to October.
“Based on information provided by Harris County and Harris County Toll Road Authority that the Harris County COVID-19 Threat Level System is currently at Level 1: Stay Home, and the resulting impact this has on the bike course, the Ironman Texas triathlon unfortunately cannot take place on April 24, 2021,” the company announced today. “All potential options are being reviewed and it is our hope to confirm a new October 2021 event date in The Woodlands by early April.”
While the full-distance race in Texas won’t be taking place in April, at this point Ironman 70.3 Texas, which is supposed to be run on April 11 in Galveston, remains on the schedule. The same goes for Ironman 70.3 Lubbock, which is scheduled for June 27.
In today’s release Ironman also announced that “officials are working on an additional race location in Texas to host a full-distance Ironman event in 2021.” Details on this new race will be “shared in the near future.”
