A big group of Japanese doctors doesn’t like the thought of thousands of athletes coming to Tokyo for the Olympics this year. If it were up to the Tokyo Medical Practitioners Association (MPA), an association that includes about 6,000 doctors – the event would be canceled. They made that known in an open letter to the Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga.
According to the MPA, the hospitals are already to full and lack spare capacity. “We strongly request that the authorities convince the IOC (International Olympic Committee) that holding the Olympics is difficult and obtain its decision to cancel the Games,” they wrote in the letter. They also mentioned that the vaccination process in Japan is slow. Only 3.5 percent of the 126 million people living in Japan have been vaccinated so far.
