High temperatures and a demanding course set the stage for a thrilling edition of Challenge Walchsee, where Switzerland’s Nina Derron and Germany’s Fabian Kraft put on masterclasses in resilience to capture hard-earned victories. For Derron, the win carried an extra layer of celebration, keeping the Walchsee title in the family after her sister, Julie Derron, claimed the crown last year.

Women’s Race: Derron Holds Off Fierce Late-Race Surge

The day kicked off with a non-wetsuit swim in the pristine waters of Walchsee. France’s Justine Guerard led the pro field into T1 with a time of 27:20, closely shadowed by a tight pack including Denise Cavallini (ITA), Sophie Fischer (GER), and Sara Sandrini (ITA).

Once out on the bike, Guerard initially spearheaded the pace alongside Australia’s Milan Agnew. However, the dynamics quickly shifted. Nina Derron, who had exited the water in eighth place with a 30-second deficit, launched an aggressive attack. By the time the athletes hit the first major climb at the 12km mark, Derron had effortlessly bridged the gap and seized the lead. Following Agnew’s subsequent withdrawal from the race, Guerard and Sandrini were left to form a chasing duo.

Derron delivered a dominant biking performance, entering T2 with a seemingly comfortable 2:33 advantage.

However, the 21km run proved to be a nail-biter. Running shoulder-to-shoulder, Guerard and Sandrini systematically chipped away at the Swiss athlete’s lead. Without live splits on the course, Derron focused on managing her pace in the searing heat.

Ultimately, Derron’s grit paid off. She crossed the finish line to take the win in 4:08:47, with a relentless Guerard finishing just 16 seconds behind in 4:09:02. Sara Santini completed the podium in 4:09:29 after a spectacular battle to the final meters.

“It was the plan to follow my sister’s win, but it’s for sure not certain and I really had to work hard for it,” Derron said at the finish line, praising the volunteers who provided critical aid stations in the scorching conditions. “Luckily on the last lap I felt like I could keep the pace, but it got pretty close!”

Men’s Race: Kraft Commands the Run While Hug Blazes Field

The men’s race promised an aggressive tempo from the first stroke. Fabian Kraft led the field out of the water in 23:44, with fellow German Jonas Wechsler and Italy’s Frederico Murero right on his heels. A large, formidable chase group – including Tom Hug, Niklas Ludwig, and Samuel Studer – exited just over a minute later.

Roadworks forced a slight reduction of the bike course to 80km, which only intensified the racing. Ludwig and Kraft dictated the rhythm at the front, but the oppressive heat began to take its toll, whittling the lead group down to just five athletes in the final 10km of the bike.

Following a chaotic transition where Studer missed the dismount line and lost crucial seconds, Wechsler was the first to head out onto the run, though Kraft blasted past him within the opening kilometer.

As the run unfolded, the leaderboard underwent a massive shake-up. While Kraft solidified his lead, Wechsler faded under the sun, allowing Paul Weigand and Tobias Sattler to move into podium positions.

The real fireworks, however, came from Tom Hug. After exiting the swim back in 22nd place, Hug executed a stunning tactical comeback. On the run, he tore through the field. With just 4km remaining, Hug overtook Sattler for third and set his sights on Weigand.

Kraft safely secured the victory in 3:36:33 after a grueling solo run. Behind him, a sprint for the remaining podium spots saw Weigand just hold on for second in 3:38:03, with a fast-finishing Hug taking third a mere ten seconds later in 3:38:13.

“It was a great race but also a hot race of course – it was tough from the beginning,” Kraft reflected. “The water was warm and it was a fight against the heat and myself. The local team did an amazing job – there was water every 300 meters on the run to cool us down.”
