Review Hoka Cielo X1 3.0: Time for a New Protagonist

Forget everything you know about running shoes, because it’s time for a new protagonist: the Hoka Cielo X1 3.0 has been out for a few months now. We’ve clocked a significant number of kilometers in them and, frankly, we are stunned by how well Hoka’s flagship model performs. Here are our extensive findings.

Just a year ago, we wrote a very positive review of the Hoka Cielo X1 2.0 – the predecessor to the now-launched Cielo X1 3.0 – using superlatives like “a new era” and “an incredibly fine shoe.” At the same time, that shoe proved to be somewhat more unstable at times than one might expect – or hope – especially at lower paces, which was a valid point of criticism. It is exactly this point that the Cielo X1 3.0 seems to have addressed: the shoe has become more stable, yet simultaneously even faster.

That extra stability primarily comes from the updated geometry of the heel, which ensures a more streamlined landing with every step. However, be aware that the Cielo X1 3.0 is still a racing shoe pur sang, equipped with a full carbon plate, and we certainly do not recommend it for your long, easy recovery runs. Regardless of its improved stability, the Cielo X1 3.0 does not offer actual “support.” Everything about this shoe breathes speed, forward momentum, and aerodynamics. You buy the Hoka Cielo X1 3.0 not just to improve your personal records, but perhaps to shatter them.

However, this comes with a downside; over the past few weeks, we tested this shoe on both flat asphalt and off-road in hilly terrain. Naturally, we understand the Cielo X1 3.0 wasn’t made for the latter, but sometimes you can’t avoid a change of terrain. Honesty compels us to say that on uneven ground, the Cielo X1 3.0 loses all its value. The shoe becomes unstable and simply uncomfortable to run in. If you are a true off-road runner, stay far away from the X1 3.0.

Are you looking for a shoe that feels stable on asphalt and seems to propel you forward? Then this is the model for you. The exceptionally low weight – only 213 grams for the men’s model and 175 grams for the women’s – benefits speed without compromising on excellent cushioning. Additionally, the Cielo X1 3.0 excels in responsiveness. With every step, you feel that “bouncy” sensation and receive energy back from the shoe. Your pace becomes demonstrably higher and your toe-off more efficient. Even your recovery time after a heavy interval session or high-pace race is shortened. Run in these once and you’ll immediately understand why pro athletes are so lyrical about carbon.

The Cielo X1 3.0 is not only light but also made of very thin, breathable material thanks to the special leno weaving technique. By placing the laces slightly more to the side – rather than in the center of the shoe – it fits even better around the foot. A side note is that we found the shoe particularly difficult to put on; it is possible, of course, but because it fits so snugly, you almost need a shoehorn to get the Cielo X1 3.0 on. Once it’s on, it feels like a second skin and seems almost interwoven with your body. That feeling is truly fantastic.

All in all, Hoka can be proud of what they have achieved with the Cielo X1 3.0. Yes, the shoe comes with a few caveats that are simply part of high-end carbon shoes, but the advantages far outweigh them, making the minor drawbacks disappear like snow in the sun. With this model, you are bringing world-class performance into your home, and you can certainly prepare yourself for wonderful, fast kilometers and personal records.

The Hoka Cielo X1 3.0 has a retail price of 275 euros.
