While Daniela Ryf’s name appears on the start list for the Ironman 70.3 European Championship in Elsinore, Denmark on the weekend, media reports and the start list posted by the Professional Triathletes Organisation indicate Ryf won’t be in the race tomorrow morning. That means all eyes will be on Lucy Charles-Barclay and defending champion Holly Lawrence in the women’s race.
We know for sure they’re both in Denmark – both have let their fans know that they’re looking forward to the race tomorrow through Instagram posts. (See below.) It should be a fun race to watch between these two – both are in great form with Lawrence coming off a wire-to-wire win at Ironman 70.3 Des Moines last weekend, while Charles-Barclay has been on fire throughout the spring with a runner-up finish at the Super League Triathlon Arena Games London, a runner-up finish at the British Olympic Trials 1,500 m, a fifth-place finish at WTCS Leeds and a win at the Dorney Lake Triathlon two weeks ago.
Charles-Barclay is arguably the best swimmer in the sport, but Lawrence is routinely one of the swim leaders in her races, too, so things should be interesting right from the gun in the morning. Others to watch for in the competitive women’s field include Germany’s Carolin Lehrieder and Denmark’s Maja Stage Nielsen.
The men’s race promises to be an exciting one, too, with a stacked men’s field led by defending champ Rudy Von Berg (USA). The list of men who will be happy to take the race to Von Berg include Danes Daniel Baekkegard and Magnus Ditlev, Great Britain’s George Goodwin, Australia’s Max Neumann and Germans Andreas Dreitz and Florian Angert.
